Cyanobacteria
Distinguishing Features and Morphology: Large in size because they're colonial and have a turquoise tint. During a bloom, they're often very abundant and become tangled up with other things.
Size: 0.5-40 microns
Source of Energy: Photosynthesis; absorb nutrients from the water column
Reproduction: Sexual and clonal
Interesting Fact: Prokaryotes
Negative Impact: They are associated with eutrophic conditions. They form blooms, some of which are toxic. When they degrade, they create conditions that are low in oxygen content, which can be problematic for fish and zooplankton in the lake.
